Check Out This Guitar Solo From A Gospel Gal in the 1950s

This is a performer that goes by the name “Sister Rosetta Tharpe” performing Up Above My Head (I Hear Music in the Air). The exact performance date isn’t known, but it was on the show TV Gospel Time with the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church Choir.

This is a really cool performance, especially given the time frame, and check out that guitar solo!

(Isn’t that a Gibson Les Paul SG custom?)

Wow, she smokes! But it ain’t the 1950s.

This is most likely the early to mid 1960s, since that Gibson guitar design didn’t appear until 1961, and it appears to be one of the earlier versions of that model, so if it was new (and it looks pretty new), it’s probably between ’61 and ’65.

Tharpe toured with blues Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Reverend Gary Davis, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee in 1964, so it could be around that time. Looks like Jimmy Page might have learned a thing or two from her too!

Thanks for the update Derek! I’ve seen a lot of other videos of her playing with these other guys. Just pop her name into YouTube and there’s plenty to see. :)
