This is a PRETTY COOL trick with the iPad!

In the video, Eric Persing shows a very cool live performance application of using Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments like Omnisphere, Trilian and Stylus with the iPad via a new third party app called “Air Display” – which turns the iPad into a wireless, external touchscreen monitor for Macs.

By the way, this iPad app and the techniques shown in the video can be used with any software, but it’s particularly interesting with software like the professional Omnisphere Power Synth that is far too powerful to run on the iPad natively.

Diego Stocco – you may or may not have heard that name, but there’s a good chance you still know who he is.

He is one of the prominent sound design geniuses that created so many of the cool sounds available in Omnisphere, the ultra cool virtual synth from Spectrasonics.

Not only does he do creative sampling, he builds (or destroys) custom instruments to aid in his sound design. One of his most famous sounds in Omnisphere is the Burning Piano. That’s right, he set an upright piano on fire just so he could sample the sound of it. My hero!

Now he’s at it again hacking up an acoustic bass, as well as several other stringed instruments. He calls this new instrument the Experibass. Check out this very creative guy at work…

Here are Diego’s comments on this project…

Few weeks ago I visited a luthier looking for instruments parts, I had an idea in mind for an instrument I wanted to build. My curiosity was to hear the sound of violin, viola and cello strings amplified through the body of a double bass. I came up with a quadruple-neck experimental “something” that I thought to call Experibass.

To play it I used cello and double bass bows, a little device I built with fishing line and hose clamps, a paintbrush, a fork, spoons, a kick drum pedal and a drum stick. I hope you’ll like it!

Thanks to luthier John Wu for providing me the parts, even though I warned him that I was probably going to create a “monster” : )

My “go to” virtual instrument for bass for years has been Spectrasonics Trilogy. Nothing beats it, hands down. The Scarbee bases are nice, but Trilogy stills tops it in most instances in my book. However, if you can have both, so be it. icon smile Spectrasonics Trillian Is Finally Here! Then the Intel Macs came along and Trilogy didn’t really work on these new generation computers. Not easily any way. So, we Trilogy users have been in a holding pattern awaiting the next update. An update never materialized, but a significant upgrade did.

The next generation is here and it’s called Spectrasonics Trillian; and it’s a STONE COLD MONSTER. The new core library is a whopping 34 gigabytes! More great news is the price; just $299 if you are a first timer. Either $99 or FREEeee as an upgrade, depending on what you have now.
