Spectrasonics Trillian Is Finally Here!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My “go to” virtual instrument for bass for years has been Spectrasonics Trilogy. Nothing beats it, hands down. The Scarbee bases are nice, but Trilogy stills tops it in most instances in my book. However, if you can have both, so be it. :) Then the Intel Macs came along and Trilogy didn’t really work on these new generation computers. Not easily any way. So, we Trilogy users have been in a holding pattern awaiting the next update. An update never materialized, but a significant upgrade did.

The next generation is here and it’s called Spectrasonics Trillian; and it’s a STONE COLD MONSTER. The new core library is a whopping 34 gigabytes! More great news is the price; just $299 if you are a first timer. Either $99 or FREEeee as an upgrade, depending on what you have now.

Mere words just can’t do it justice. Here are four HD videos of the man himself, creator Eric Persing, showing just a small amount of what this monster is capable of. Note: These videos are embedded with Flash. For easy accessibility here are direct download links to the zipped Quicktime files for each:

Google Launches Music Search With Lala, Pandora, Rhapsody, imeem & MySpace

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

This just in from the Technology department at the Los Angeles Times:

google_musicGoogle this afternoon began rolling out its widely rumored music feature, which lets users search for and listen to entire songs for free.

The search engine banded together with several music service sites that are responsible for streaming the songs on Google’s search results pages. Searching for Coldplay, for example, will yield the band’s album cover art, alongside four popular songs that users can play once for free. Once a song has been played by a user, they will only be able to hear a 30-second sample of tune. (The feature is being gradually rolled out over the next 24 hours, so some folks may not see the feature until tomorrow.)

Google itself isn’t paying record companies for the rights to play millions of songs on its search page; its partners are. Those include Lala, Pandora, imeem, MySpace Music and Rhapsody, a subscription service from Real Networks. All have licensing agreements with record labels to stream or sample millions of songs online.

The Mountain View, Calif., search company said it’s not interested in competing with digital music retailers such as Amazon and Apple’s iTunes.

“We’re not in the music business per se,” said R.J. Pittman, Google’s director of product for the music search project. “We don’t license the music nor sell the music directly on Google. We are merely a music search feature.”

Weird Al Yankovic In The Studio – BOO-YAH!

Monday, October 26th, 2009

A behind-the-scenes look at “Weird Al” Yankovic and his band in the studio during the making of the “Straight Outta Lynwood” album.

If you were hired to play on one of his sessions I’ll bet it would be one of the more challenging assignments of your career; loads of fun, but challenging. (Thanks to @Gilligan204)

Soundation Studio, The Web Based Sequencer

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Here’s another move towards music creation in the cloud.

Soundation Studio is the web based sequencer that enables you to make music, ringtones and audio clips directly from the internet without downloading any software. This beta version includes over 400 royalty free audio loops, 9 different effects, track automation, basic loop editing, loop audition, master channel control and mix down to desktop. Please give this beta a go and let us know your impressions.

Soundation Studio is developed by PowerFX, an industry leader with over 10 years experience producing and digitally distributing loops, samples and sound effects which have been included in music making software products from Apple, Cakewalk, Yamaha, Sony, Propellerheads, Abelton Live and Microsoft.

PowerFX is one of my favorite loop producers. I believe they’re responsible for a lot of the Apple loops in the SoundTrack application, some of which may also be in Garageband.
