Kenny Gioia – Music Production With Pro Tools Vol 1 – Pop

Monday, December 7th, 2009

I just finished this great video course on pop music production by Kenny Gioia. It’s chock full of great tips, techniques and workflow ideas for all types of music production. And while it says it’s for Pro Tools, I didn’t see much that wouldn’t apply to any DAW.

This is your chance to watch over the shoulder of a real studio pro as he records and produces a song from scratch. Here’s a short preview video:

I can highly recommend this. I learned just a couple of new keyboard shortcut applications that were worth the price of the entire video. I also recommend any of Kenny’s other video series as well.

Some time ago it was obvious to me I would buy whatever Kenny puts out, even before I know what it’s about. I know I’m guaranteed quality, useful training no matter what the topic is.

Here’s more information from the Groove 3 web site:

The New TANGO Smart Console From “Mixing With Your Mind” Author

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Stav (Michael Paul Stavrou), author of “Mixing With Your Mind“, introduces his new pro-sumer level of DAW control surface based on his ARC technology in the Smart AV line. It’s called the TANGO Smart Console.

Unlike previous control control surfaces in this lineup, it now works with Pro Tools (via the HUI protocol) as well as most other popular DAWs. List price seems to be around $8,000.00.

He has an interesting catch phrase that basically says you can make any change on the console “faster than you can say it.” Have a look:

Automated Mixing? Waves New Vocal Rider Plugin

Waves Vocal Rider Plugin

Waves Vocal Rider Plugin

Waves new Vocal Rider plugin was just introduced at AES 2009. Vocal Rider is designed to match your vocal tracks to the rest of the mix and then keep the relative volume throughout the song.

All you do is instantiate it on your vocal track, bus a summed instrumental mix to the side-chain, and hit play. The plug-in fader then takes over, keeping the relative volume of the vocals and the rest of the mix constant. And, unlike compression, Vocal Rider doesn’t crush the dynamic range or color the vocal track at all.

  • Intelligent adjustment of the vocal track based on the dynamics of the music
  • Saves time doing the kind of automation you would have to do manually
  • Writes automatic volume riding to the track as automation for fine tuning

So, will it work? Or rather, will it work well? The idea is more than a little interesting to me. I guess only time and a FREEeee hands-on demo will tell. :)

Take a look at the video of it in action:
